What it is

Darkroom is a webcam studio with 77 presets across dither, multibit, ASCII, Matrix and CRT looks. Video, audio, inference and recordings never leave the browser.

What I built

  • Rendering: GPU paths in WebGL for ordered dithering, multibit palettes (2-bit to RGB565), ASCII shading by measured ink density, Matrix rain and a multi-pass CRT beam with phosphor persistence; Canvas 2D fallbacks for CPU-only mode.
  • Depth: optional 3D point-cloud and wave modes from Depth Anything V2 on WebGPU (WASM fallback), pulsing with system-audio bass.
  • Hands and detection: MediaPipe finger tracking frames the effect between thumb and index finger; object detection runs YOLOv10, RF-DETR or D-FINE in a worker via transformers.js, with presets for faces, people, pets and street scenes and effects applied inside or outside boxes.
  • Capture: photos and MP4/WebM recordings of the rendered view, with native sharing where supported.
  • Mobile mode: lighter starting values (720p, smaller detection frames) without blocking heavy models.
